General dentists will assist and gain proficiency in:
Prerequisites
1) Read and review the following articles on Caries Management Risk Assessment (CAMBRA)
a. Pediatric Dental Care: Prevention and Management Protocols Based on Caries Risk Assessment
b. Into the Future: Keeping Healthy Teeth Caries Free: Pediatric CAMBRA Protocols
c. Caries Management by Risk Assessment – A Practitioner’s Guide
d. First Smiles: Dental Health Begins at Birth
2) Read and review the “Oral Health During Pregnancy and Early Childhood: Evidence-Based Guidelines for Health Professionals”
3) Complete online course through the CDA/First 5 organization’s First Smiles Training Course. Print & submit certification form. (Sample)
Application Process:
1) Submit your application, which contains an essay answering the following questions, four weeks prior to the start of your rotation:
a. How have you shown your interest in pediatric dentistry?
b. What would you like to take away from the Infant Oral Care Selective?
c. What experience have you had in pediatric dentistry?
2) Submit a resume.
3) Submit your First 5 certificate of completion.
4) After selective acceptance, interview with the faculty director of the Infant Oral Health Clinic and Selective, Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez. You will be contacted by the IOCP Coordinator via email to schedule an appointment
- To offer general dentists practice in working with the youngest population of pediatric patients to gain more in depth pediatric experience;
- To give general dentists more access to patients in a community health setting; and,
- To provide general dentists the opportunity to test and implement strategies to integrate pediatric dentistry with their medical pediatric cohorts.
General Dentists Role:

- Assessing caries risk through the use of the CAMBRA tool and clinical exam results;
- Examining, diagnosing, and treating very young children,
- Working in a community based clinical environment,
- Understanding the barriers to access in care for lower income families,
- Delivering perinatal and infant/toddler oral health education, and
- Understanding how to integrate infant oral care in with the standard care delivered by pediatricians.
